"This is basic stuff that every musician needs to know."

At some point in the learning process, understanding the theory behind the music can be valuable. However, I want to warn you, theory without aural representation is not music. We will study theory with instrument in hand.

Most of us were not motivated to learn to play music by the theoretical aspect. We played because it felt good. As you development as a performer, questions naturally arise. It is important that you learn the basic theory behind the sounds you probably already use. This can give you a comfort level that you may not have at this point. Sometimes it just feels secure to know.

This course will present the basics of music theory in a clear and concise manner. Intervals, chords, notation, rhythmic subdivisions, scales, keys, harmonic movement, and guide-tones, will be the material we learn.

Hearing and playing the mechanics of music will ensure that you internalize the information presented. Playing good music is always fun, and learning music theory can help you create good music.

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • spell chords
  • play major scale modes
  • understand intervals
  • understand keys and key signatures
  • perform rhythmic subdivisions
  • recoginze basic harmonic movement
  • correctly notate music symbols
